Justice out of reach for millions of women
HUNDREDS of millions of women around the world have no legal protection from domestic violence, a global review of women's rights has heard.
The UN review, entitled The Progress of the World's Women: In Pursuit of Justice, documented women's access to justice in over 190 countries.
"Women's inadequate and unequal access to justice... (is) widespread and systemic," executive director of UN Women Australia, Julie McKay, said at the national lauch of the report in Sydney today.
"While 125 countries have laws in place to outlaw domestic violence, there are still 66 countries where this is not the case.
"This means 600 million women and girls live without this basic protection."
Women all over the world, however, are battling to change the system, she said.
"What inspires me... are the stories of ordinary women who in the face of a system stacked against them, have pioneered reforms and driven change," she said.
"They have shown the resilience and ingenuity of women in situations of disadvantage and have changed the lives of all women around them."
Governments needed to step in to end discrimination, she said.
"We should strive to make this individual action unnecessary by placing responsibility back on governments," she said.
"It is governments who have the suite of tools available to end discrimination and to empower thousands of women."
